March is finally here, ushering in the beginning of the warmer months. As winter cedes into spring, you can still expect some fairly cold temperatures but by the end of the month, the temperatures can be expected to climb much higher. With the increase in temperature comes the arrival of the cherry blossoms. They will start in Jeju but slowly move up the country along with the warm weather. So if you’re visiting Korea this March you can probably leave the huge winter jacket at home. Just make sure you take a light spring jacket for the colder evenings.

Dates: March 1st 2020

Location: Throughout Korea

March Independence Movement Day is a public holiday in Korea which commemorates a public protest that took place in 1919 whilst Korea was under the occupation of Japan. During the protest, thirty-three activists read the Korean Declaration of Independence in Seoul’s Tapgol Park (탑골공원). Reading of the declaration was considered a crime at the time, but the act took place to demonstrate the Korean resistance to Japanese occupation. Following this, thousands of demonstrations would take place throughout Korea with many of those involved being arrested or killed. The event is celebrated each year as a remembrance of those who laid down there lives for the freedom that Korean people know and experience today. The Korean Declaration of Independence is read every year in Tapgol Park (탑골공원). Concerts and parades take place throughout the day and many Korean businesses raise flags in remembrance.

Useful tip: Be aware that if you’re travelling in Korea on March 1st some businesses and restaurants may be closed.
